When it comes to beauty, I think it’s fair to say women are very conflicted. Although there are thousands of adjectives we could use to describe the value of women, such as: smart, funny, sincere, honest, kind, loyal (and the list goes on and on), the one qualilty we seem to hold higher than all others is beauty. Women throughout hisotry and across cultures have committed some horrific acts to both ourselves and our own daughters in the name of “beauty”, and we continue to do so to this day.
Although we often claim that our pursuit of beauty has nothing to do with men - and often get offended when they critique us or offer their opinions - is it really true that what we are chasing and pursuing has nothing to do with men? America Fererra’s speech in the Barbie movie clearly hit a nerve with women, but the question is who exactly is holding us up to these standards? Is it possible that it is actually women putting enormous pressure on each other to uphold these impossibly beauty standards? As much as we love to villianize men, is it possibly that we might just be our own worst enemy?
